Are Your Spiritual Gifts Awakening? Why Self-Trust Comes Before Intuition

A spiritual awakening does not always begin with a dramatic mystical experience.

Sometimes it begins with a question that simply refuses to go away:

What do I actually believe?

Maybe the beliefs, roles, expectations, or routines that once gave your life structure no longer feel true.

Maybe you are having vivid dreams, stronger gut feelings, unusual synchronicities, deeper emotional responses, or moments of knowing that are difficult to explain.

Or maybe you simply feel an increasing desire to slow down, look within, and live more honestly.

In my conversation with Pamela Downes, founder of Spirit Calling, we explored spiritual awakening, intuitive development, healing, discernment, and what happens when we stop constantly looking outside ourselves for answers.

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation is this:

Your spiritual gifts may become easier to recognize when you stop outsourcing your knowing.

Because spiritual growth is not simply about collecting more information.

It is about developing enough self-trust to discern what actually feels true for you.

In this episode of the Spiritual Spotlight Series, Pamela Downes and I explore spiritual awakening, intuitive gifts, grief, healing, spiritual discernment, and what it means to trust your own inner guidance.

Key Takeaways

  • Spiritual awakening can begin when old beliefs and identities no longer feel aligned.

  • Intuitive gifts may show up through dreams, inner knowing, sensitivity, or subtle bodily awareness.

  • Trusted teachers and practitioners can support you without replacing your own discernment.

  • Constant spiritual information can sometimes make it harder—not easier—to hear yourself.

  • Spiritual experiences do not have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

  • Self-trust develops through curiosity, reflection, boundaries, and lived experience.

  • The goal of spiritual guidance should be greater empowerment, not greater dependence.

What Does a Spiritual Awakening Actually Feel Like?

We often imagine spiritual awakening as one enormous moment.

A vision.

A near-death experience.

A mystical encounter.

A sudden realization that changes everything.

And sometimes awakening does happen that way.

But very often, it begins much more quietly.

You may start questioning beliefs you accepted for years.

Relationships may feel different.

You may become more aware of patterns you once ignored.

You may feel increasingly sensitive to certain environments, conversations, people, or forms of media.

You may begin asking deeper questions about:

  • Purpose

  • Love

  • Death

  • Healing

  • Faith

  • Consciousness

  • Your relationship with yourself

  • What you actually believe about life

Pamela described experiencing a persistent feeling that she was somehow different or did not completely fit into the spaces around her.

Eventually, questions about spirituality, God, life after death, love, and meaning became harder for her to ignore.

Sometimes that discomfort is not evidence that something is wrong with you.

It may be an invitation to discover more of who you actually are.

7 Signs Your Spiritual Gifts May Be Awakening

There is no universal checklist for spiritual awakening, and not every unusual feeling needs a spiritual explanation.

But there are experiences that many people notice as they begin becoming more inwardly aware.

1. You Begin Questioning Old Beliefs

Things you once accepted automatically may suddenly feel incomplete.

You may begin wondering:

Do I actually believe this—or was I taught to believe it?

That question can apply to spirituality, relationships, work, success, identity, or even what you believe you are “supposed” to want.

2. Your Intuition Feels Stronger

You may notice gut feelings, inner nudges, sudden clarity, or a persistent knowing that something feels right—or wrong.

These signals do not always arrive with an explanation.

Sometimes they simply ask you to pay attention.

3. Your Dreams Become More Vivid

Some people notice more memorable dreams during periods of spiritual growth.

Rather than immediately assigning a spiritual meaning to every dream, become curious.

Notice recurring themes, emotions, people, or symbols and consider what they may be reflecting back to you.

4. You Become More Sensitive

You may feel more affected by environments, relationships, conversations, or emotional energy.

This does not necessarily mean you are absorbing everyone else's energy.

Sometimes greater sensitivity simply means you are becoming more aware of what supports you and what does not.

5. You Crave More Quiet

Constant noise may suddenly feel exhausting.

You may want more time alone.

More nature.

Less scrolling.

More silence.

Sometimes your inner voice becomes easier to recognize when everyone else's voice gets quieter.

6. Old Patterns Become Harder to Ignore

People pleasing.

Overgiving.

Fear.

Self-sabotage.

Avoidance.

Relationships that no longer feel healthy.

Behaviors you once tolerated may become increasingly uncomfortable.

Awareness often comes before change.

7. You Want to Live More Honestly

Perhaps one of the biggest signs of awakening is simply the desire to live in greater alignment with yourself.

You may feel less willing to perform a version of yourself that no longer feels true.

That can be uncomfortable.

But it can also be incredibly freeing.

Why Outside Validation Can Weaken Your Intuition

There is nothing wrong with asking for help.

Pamela speaks openly about mentors and practitioners who supported her through grief, spiritual exploration, and major life changes.

I believe support can be incredibly valuable too.

But there is an important difference between receiving guidance and giving away your authority.

If every decision requires:

A reading.

A spiritual teacher.

A social-media opinion.

A psychic.

A podcast.

A sign.

Or permission from someone who appears to know more than you…

Eventually it becomes difficult to hear yourself.

Outside guidance should help you reflect.

It should give you another perspective.

It should help you become more empowered.

It should not convince you that somebody else permanently knows your life better than you do.

That is one of the reasons discernment matters so much.

The healthiest spiritual guidance eventually leads you back to yourself.

Spiritual Information Overload Is Real

We have access to more spiritual information than ever before.

Within a few minutes online you can receive:

A tarot reading.

An astrology forecast.

A channeling.

A manifestation technique.

A prediction.

An energy update.

A healing method.

A video explaining what your dream means.

And three people announcing what the universe apparently wants you to do before lunch.

It is a lot.

More information does not always create more clarity.

Sometimes it creates spiritual static.

That is when discernment becomes essential.

Before accepting a teaching or message as truth, ask yourself:

  • Does this make me feel more grounded or more afraid?

  • Does this encourage me to think and discern for myself?

  • Does it empower me or make me dependent?

  • Does this feel compassionate?

  • Does it align with my values?

  • Does it help me engage with my actual life?

  • Do I feel clearer afterward—or more confused?

Not every message belongs to you.

Not every spiritual teaching needs to become your belief.

And someone speaking with certainty does not automatically make them correct.

Pamela Downes' Experience of Her Spiritual Gifts Opening

Pamela describes a period when her intuitive senses—or what are sometimes called the clairs—began becoming stronger.

In her experience, this included vivid dreams, visions, inner hearing, sensing, and moments of strong knowing.

One significant chapter of her personal journey included attending an ayahuasca retreat at Rythmia Life Advancement Center.

Pamela describes the retreat and subsequent breathwork experiences as meaningful turning points in her spiritual development and healing.

These are Pamela's personal experiences and interpretations.

Plant medicine, altered states, channeling, psychic development, or dramatic mystical experiences are not requirements for spiritual awakening.

Your spiritual path does not need to look like someone else's to be real.

For me, the more interesting question is:

What happens after the experience?

Does it help you become more present?

More compassionate?

More honest?

More grounded?

More willing to take responsibility for your life?

A spiritual experience can be profound.

But how you integrate it into your everyday life matters just as much.

Healing Is Not About Becoming Someone Else

Another powerful theme in Pamela's work is the way painful experiences can affect how we see ourselves.

Pamela often describes this through spiritual and energetic language, including energetic imprints and restoring one's original blueprint.

You may understand those ideas spiritually, symbolically, or simply as a way of describing how our experiences can shape us.

Pain can affect:

  • Self-esteem

  • Relationships

  • Trust

  • Boundaries

  • Our sense of safety

  • Our ability to use our voice

  • The choices we make

Healing does not mean pretending those things never happened.

It means changing the relationship you have with what happened.

You can begin saying:

This happened to me, but it is not the whole of me.

I can understand my patterns without shaming myself for them.

I can experience fear without allowing fear to make every decision.

I can choose something different now.

That is powerful healing.

Self-Trust Requires Courage, Not Constant Positivity

There is a version of spirituality that can make everything sound beautiful.

Raise your vibration.

Stay positive.

Trust the universe.

Choose love.

But real life is also grief.

Loss.

Change.

Fear.

Financial stress.

Relationships ending.

Uncertainty.

Pamela's own spiritual journey included the death of her father, the end of her marriage, financial difficulty, and major changes in her life.

Self-trust does not mean pretending those things are easy.

It means remaining connected to yourself while moving through them.

Sometimes self-trust looks like courage.

Sometimes it looks like asking for help.

Sometimes it looks like walking away.

Sometimes it looks like saying no.

And sometimes it looks like resting because you no longer need to prove how strong you are.

Spiritual growth does not require constant positivity.

It requires honesty.

Simple Ways to Reconnect With Your Inner Guidance

You do not need a complicated ritual to strengthen your connection with yourself.

Often, the simplest practices are the most powerful.

Create Small Pockets of Silence

Do not fill every quiet moment.

Turn off the podcast.

Put down the phone.

Give yourself a few minutes without consuming anything.

Notice what comes up when there is finally space to hear yourself.

Spend Time in Nature

Go outside.

Notice the trees.

The sky.

The wind.

Birds.

Sunlight.

Nature can help bring you back into the present moment and out of constant mental processing.

Use Music Intentionally

Play something that changes your state.

Music can help you reconnect with emotion, creativity, movement, and joy.

Not every spiritual practice needs to involve sitting perfectly still.

Let Yourself Feel

Not every uncomfortable emotion is a spiritual problem.

Sometimes you are tired.

Sometimes you are sad.

Sometimes something hurt.

Sometimes you are angry.

You do not have to immediately turn every emotion into a lesson, sign, or healing assignment.

Feelings are allowed to simply be feelings.

Practice Curiosity

Instead of immediately demanding an answer, ask:

What am I noticing?

What feels true right now?

What keeps coming back to my awareness?

Curiosity creates space where certainty can sometimes shut it down.

You Do Not Need Everyone to Understand Your Awakening

As you change, some relationships may change too.

People around you may not understand your beliefs.

They may not be interested in spirituality.

They may question your experiences.

They may be walking an entirely different path.

You do not have to convince them.

Spiritual growth does not require winning every argument.

You can love someone and disagree with them.

You can set boundaries without making someone the enemy.

You can stop trying to prove what you believe and simply live in a way that reflects it.

Sometimes peace begins when you no longer need everyone else to validate the person you are becoming.

Rachel's Takeaway

One of the things I keep coming back to in my own work is this:

The goal of spiritual guidance should never be to make you less capable of hearing yourself.

Teachers can help.

Mentors can help.

Readings can help.

Podcasts can help.

Healing practitioners can help.

But eventually, everything should lead you back to your own inner knowing.

Your spiritual gifts do not need to look dramatic.

They do not have to look like Pamela's gifts.

They do not have to look like mine.

Maybe your gift begins as a quiet knowing.

A sensitivity.

A dream.

A feeling in your body.

A moment when something simply does not feel right anymore.

Pay attention.

Stay curious.

Practice discernment.

And give yourself permission to trust what you are learning about yourself.

Because sometimes awakening is not about receiving more messages.

It is about finally trusting yourself enough to hear the ones that have been there all along.
